Transmission Festival, one of the biggest trance festivals in the world, well known for its breathtaking laser show. After a successful edition last year, the world-class trance event returned to Thailand for Transmission Asia. Play BPM was there and had the opportunity to talk with Martijn van den Berg, Brand Manager Transmission International, responsible for all the transmission events outside Prague. Check it all here:
Transmission started in 2006 in Prague, the Czech Republic. The interest for trance music was at that time growing a lot in the Czech Republic, but all the parties were production wise at a basic level. Our objective was to create a new event with a higher production level.
First of all the production, most of all our massive laser show. You won’t see it like here at other trance festivals. Also every year, every show, has a new theme. This theme will be told during the night through the visuals and set of the dj. This is something unique too. Markus Schulz is our resident dj, who is performing every edition of Transmission since the beginning, also Vision Impossible, Dutch award-winning theme, and the FunktionOne Sound system from the UK. All aspects what makes Transmission different than other festivals. Transmission is not only the set of a dj, but the whole experience with lights, videos, production and massive stage in total.
At first tonight obviously, here in Thailand, but also this summer we will be present for the first time at Airbeat One festival in Germany. I´m very excited about that, the festival will take place at an old Airport. We also just released the date for our own edition in Czech Republic, soon we will release more information about Transmission China and more shows to be announced for 2019!
Who knows Brazil, trance lovers are all over the world. There are many countries who ´need´ or would like to have a Transmission. We got a lot of requests from fans and promoters.
We were looking for a way to get in touch with our fans on a more regular basis to keep sharing the love for trance and progressive music. Also to support upcoming djs, Transmission radio is a platform for them to promote their music. We are broadcasting every Wednesday at 6pm CET as Transmission radio from di.fm. In April we will also start broadcasting at Afterhours FM (a premier!), one of the biggest trance stations in the world.
Who knows one day Transmission will have his own label (kidding;p). Nowadays the event is much more than just the few hours at the event itself. People are buying their tickets and are looking forward to it months before the festival. Also after the festival, they relive it by watching the sets, pictures and after movie. There are more than 200 people with a Transmission tattoo at the moment. You can’t say anymore it’s just a festival.
I think it is well known that the Asian market is a bit behind compared to Europe when it comes to Electronic music. However, you see that it is really taking off at the moment. Not only here in Thailand but everywhere in Asia you see a lot of events coming up. There is a lot of space for growth in the near future.
For us it is all about the quality of the production, we always try to innovate. The biggest challenge is to make the show next year better than the previous year and to keep raising the bar for ourselves. We leave it also up to the djs. It doesn’t mean that if you book a dj he plays the same music as a couple of years ago. If the djs move their style, the festivals move also.
I found that hard to say, maybe that’s a better question for a dj, but I get a satisfied feeling if I see that Transmission makes a difference in people’s life, it brings them so much joy and pleasure, that is great.
I learned to never say never, Transmission is with purpose written with ´s´ not with ´ce´, to not be stuck to one genre. However at the moment we are very fine with our event how it is and our position in the market. There are many other EDM festivals in the market at the moment, 12 in a dozen I would say, no reason for us to make big changes in our music styles.
Transmission´s own edition will find place the 27th of October this year in Czech Republic, the week after the Amsterdam Dance Event. You can buy tickets on their website here.
